How can technology aided reminiscence help people with dementia?

According to the World Health organisation, there are currently more than 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, and nearly 10 million new cases every year. This includes around 900,000 people with dementia in the UK, a number which is expected to rise sharply in the coming years.

Reminiscence therapy is now being used as a treatment for people with dementia in many care homes, as a therapy proven to improve mood, sense of personal fulfilment and alleviate loneliness and depressive symptoms among people with dementia, as this article by the Social Care Institute for Excellence explains. Technology supported reminiscence therapy has been shown to help with this process.

While the use of technology may not be open to many people with dementia, its use by their family members and carers could support this process of reminiscence and ensure that people’s life stories are treasured, shared and saved.
